Interview: ButtonOwlBoutique

Please tell us a little about yourself and why you started to make things for kids.

Hi,  My name is Roz and am the creator of Button Owl.  I live just outside London, with my two daughters (2 and 4 years old) and my husband.
I have always loved to create since I was little and was inspired by watching my mother sew beautiful dresses for me.  She used to allow me to choose the fabrics which I absolutely adored.

After school I trained in soft furnishings and learned the art of traditional upholstery.  I was then accepted at the Royal School of Needlework and trained in traditional and very beautiful embroidery techniques including Coronation Goldwork.  This technique is used on the Coronation robes of a King or Queen of England when they are Coronated.

After teaching embroidery and working on small commissions, I took a detour into Corporate life until I had my two young children.  I realised that I needed to take a leap of faith and set up the business I had always dreamed of having and I couldn't be happier with that decision!

Please tell us a little about your creative process and your working space.

Button Owl was created after my search for unusual and unique products for my daughters rooms.  I couldn't find anything I really loved and so designed and made my own, then realising that others were looking for these types of unique products.
I have absolutely fallen in love with working with felts as they are available in so many beautiful colours and allow me to create beautifully tactile products while still sticking to a designed shape. I combine all the attention to detail and techniques I have learned in the past, adding small details and embellishments to Button Owl products.

Please tell us where you find inspiration for your creations.

I am a little bit obsessed with fairy lights which was where I first started with my products, then making wall hangings and cushions to complete a themed set.
I take inspiration from my beautiful surroundings, my love of the City and nature, and the fantastic imagination of my daughters and our endless roll playing.
I have so many ideas in my head for new creations and have a little note book to keep track of my 'to do' list!

Please tell us a little about your plans and dreams for the future.

Nothing makes me happier than receiving customer feedback and photographs of my products in their homes.  I just love the thought of people having and loving something so unique and personal which I've handmade.  I would like Button Owl to become a well known label and recognised for its personal service and bringing a smile to those who own a Button Owl goodie.

Thank you Roz for sharing your story!
